Of the six machines catalogued against this element, the 890 Adventure R Rally carries the name that argues hardest for it — and a name is not an argument. Rally-specification machines are bought for a great many reasons, and plenty of them cover most of their distance on sealed roads, or stand in a garage with the mileage of a second bike. The Sprint Filter PM155T12 is not specified by what a motorcycle was built to do. It is specified by what this one is actually going to do with its days.
Key Features
- The extreme end of the range: dry polyester nonwoven, 7 µm, 560 l/m²/sec
- The P08 for the same box filters at 80 µm and flows 5,050 — about nine times as much
- Dry from the first fitting to the last, so no oil can be carried forward into the intake
- Sits in the standard airbox in place of the original panel; nothing altered, no remap
- Washed and reused rather than bought again, with two years of warranty from purchase
- Worth fitting for days spent in raised dust, not for a badge on the side panel
What a model name does not tell you
Fitment lists and model names describe hardware, not use. A rally specification changes the tank, the seat height and the suspension travel, none of which alters how much mineral dust passes through the airbox on a given Tuesday. Two Rallys with consecutive frame numbers can lead completely different lives, and the one commuting through a European winter has no more use for a 7-micron medium than any other road bike. The specification has to come from the riding, and only the rider knows what that is.
The test worth applying
Count the days rather than the intentions: whole days on unsealed ground, in dust raised by the wheels ahead and by your own, in a dry season or country. Where those days make up a real share of the year, this is the medium drawn for them, and its threshold is more than ten times finer than the standard weave's. Where they do not, the trade is poor, because the flow surrendered is surrendered continuously — roughly a ninth of the P08's rated passage, on every ride the bike ever takes. In neither case is this a power part. A drop-in element does not make a standard 890 Adventure R Rally quicker; what it offers is a low starting intake restriction that cleaning returns to its starting value.
Care and cleaning
Nothing is ever applied to this element. Servicing means a compressor held to the clean side of the PM155T12, driven outwards so the dust leaves through the face that stopped it. When a season puts in more than air takes out, lukewarm water with mild detergent releases the rest — rinse until the run-off is clear. Drying happens in open air only, since heat of any kind and any flame damage the fibres, and it is refitted once no dampness is left. The illustrated sheet is under Downloads.
