A Dax hardly ever finishes a ride on the surface it spent the ride on. The part of a route that makes a machine like this worth owning tends to be the last few hundred metres: the gravel apron at the viewpoint, the dry track down to the water, the yard in front of a gate. As distance, that is nothing at all. As something to breathe, it is not, because those metres are covered at walking pace, with no wind of your own to speak of, inside a cloud the bike lifts and then sits in.
Key Features
- Dry nonwoven medium rated 14 µm at 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Catches within the depth of the fibre mat instead of at a calibrated mesh face
- Drops into the standard Dax airbox: nothing cut, nothing repositioned, no remap
- Runs dry for life, so no oil film to thin out, wash off or find its way inward
- Blown through and refitted at each service rather than thrown away
- Designed to last as long as the motorcycle; two years' warranty from purchase
Dose is not distance
What an engine takes in is not proportional to the ground covered. At road speed a motorcycle passes through whatever it disturbs and leaves it behind within a couple of lengths. At manoeuvring speed nothing carries it away: the same air hangs about the machine, the throttle is opened against the load of a slow tight turn, and the intake helps itself again to air it has already stirred up. Riders remember the hour of tarmac and forget the four minutes of gravel. The airbox keeps the other set of books, and the SM288P14 is specified against that set.
What the finer medium costs
A tighter medium keeps more out and lets less through. Those two move together always, which makes this a trade and not a ranking: 1,800 l/m²/sec is well short of what the P08 passes in the identical housing, and any page presenting 14 µm as plainly the better article has given you half a sentence. The trade works here because an air-cooled 125 in standard tune carries flow it was never going to draw on. It is not a power part — a standard airbox gives nothing back for what you put in it, and the registration class caps this machine well below anything the intake decides. Ride sealed roads and nothing else and the P08 is the fairer buy.
Care and cleaning
Regular service is an air line held to the clean side, blowing outward. If a spell of dirty weather has left something oily behind, warm water and a drop of mild detergent will shift it; rinse the SM288P14 until it comes off clear and let it dry right through in open air, never near heat or a flame, and refit it dry with nothing applied to it. A medium that loads in its depth is better cleaned early, before the surface starts to look dramatic. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Sprint Filter lists this element against the Honda ST125 Dax and against nothing else, for model years 2023 through 2026. The same housing accepts the standard P08 and the racing P08 F1-85 as well, so what is being chosen on this page is the medium, never the fit. Coverage is set out in the Fitment tab.
