A touring motorcycle is organised around its service book. Distances are large, the intervals are known in advance, and the owner plans around them rather than reacting to symptoms. An air filter fits awkwardly into that culture: nobody publishes an interval for a washable element, and nothing on the machine reports its condition. This part number is best thought of as margin bought for the schedule. The catalogue credits it with a hundred per cent more filtering surface, which is capacity, which is the odds of reaching the next planned service without a detour to the airbox.
Key Features
- Racing weave of the P08 family: woven polyester, dry, oil-free for its whole life
- 85 µm aperture with a rated 15,000 l/m²/sec, the highest flow figure published
- Filtering surface doubled against the standard-size racing element for this airbox
- 95.22 per cent retention of 100-micron particles in the maker's own comparison
- Straight exchange for the factory panel; nothing cut, nothing adapted, no remap
- Cleaned and used again for the machine's life; two years of warranty
Margin for the schedule
An RT covers ground, often loaded, often abroad, and the distance between two workshop visits can be considerable. What goes into the element over that stretch depends on where it was ridden, and is not knowable in advance. Twice the surface is twice the tolerance for a bad guess — a summer dustier than expected, a route with more roadworks than the map implied. It does not make the filter finer and it does not make the machine stronger: an element inside an unmodified airbox leaves a standard R 1250 RT as it was. It makes the plan more likely to hold.
What the racing weave is doing here at all
Sitting at the open end of the range, mostly. The eighty-five-micron cloth was drawn for sustained wide throttle high in the rev range, which is a circuit condition; the standard weave for this airbox is rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec and hands over everything a big touring twin has ever asked of it. If the RT does occasional circuit days, the most open medium earns its place on those days. If it does not, the aperture is the part of this specification with nothing to act on, and the area is the part that still does.
Care and cleaning
Servicing is done at the compressor and takes minutes. The nozzle belongs on the side facing the engine, moving outwards, so that what the weave caught departs by the route it took to get there. Where a summer of road film has left something air will not shift, hand-warm water with a very little mild detergent finishes the job. Drying happens in open moving air and on its own schedule; heat guns, ovens and flames end a polyester element for good. The K142S F1-85 is refitted dry, with nothing applied. The maintenance sheet is under Downloads.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the BMW R 1250 RT of 2019 to 2023, in the series airbox with nothing altered around it. This part number holds six catalogue entries for five machines: the R 1200 RS and RT, and the R, RS and RT of the 1250 generation. Their years appear in the Fitment tab.
