DescriptionThe whole story▼
The water-cooled R 1200 GS is the machine that made the big adventure bike a mass product, and there are still a lot of them on the road. This is the type-approved Akrapovic silencer for it: titanium sleeve, carbon end cap, 2.2 Nm more torque at 4,800 rpm, and the BMW system cases stay exactly where they are.
Key Features
- 2.2 Nm more torque at 4,800 rpm and 1.8 PS (1.3 kW) more power at 5,250 rpm — both gains sit low, where a boxer is ridden
- Titanium muffler outer sleeve with a carbon fibre end cap
- 4.42 kg against the standard 4.95 kg: 0.53 kg and 10.7 per cent less
- Compatible with the BMW side case system
- EC and ECE type approved, with the certificates supplied
- Fits both the R 1200 GS and the GS Adventure
- Installation in about 30 minutes with no remapping
The Torque Curve, Stated Properly
Akrapovic records a gain of 2.2 Nm at 4,800 rpm, and at the same time a peak torque figure of 117.9 Nm against the standard 118.8 Nm. Both numbers are true: the curve rises where a GS spends its time and gives up nine tenths of a newton metre at the very peak. On a shaft-drive boxer used two-up with luggage, that is the trade worth making, and the alternative — quoting only the gain — would be leaving out half the measurement.
Peak power moves from 119.2 PS to 120.3 PS, with the recorded 1.8 PS arriving down at 5,250 rpm rather than near the limiter.
One Restriction on the Optional Header
Akrapovic offers a titanium header for this machine, E-B12E1. It is a separate item and it changes one thing worth knowing before you buy both: with the optional header set fitted, the carbon fibre heat shield cannot be mounted. If the heat shield matters to you, the header does not go on the same bike.
No Removable Insert, and the Adventure's Extra Metal
This silencer ships without a removable noise insert. The sound level is what the unit produces as built — approved at that level, but not adjustable up or down. Worth knowing before ordering if you were expecting a quiet setting for early departures.
The other thing to check is which GS you have. The R 1200 GS Adventure carries a 30-litre tank, wider crash bars and, on most bikes, factory panniers whose right-hand rail sits close to the silencer. The part fits both the GS and the Adventure; on an Adventure with luggage fitted, plan on removing the rail first. Akrapovic measured this system on a 2017 R 1200 GS.
Fitment and Compatibility
S-B12SO16-HAABL covers the BMW R 1200 GS from model year 2013 through 2018 and the R 1200 GS Adventure from 2014 through 2018 — the water-cooled generation, not the earlier air-cooled bike. The side case system mounts over it unchanged.
Road Approval
EC type approval and ECE type approval. The certificates ship with the exhaust and are downloadable here, so on its own the silencer is a legal road part in the European Union with no entry required in the vehicle documents.
