A 155 cc single carrying two people and a load of shopping up a long incline is working about as hard as it can, and it is doing so at exactly the wrong part of its range — low road speed, high throttle opening, little air moving over the engine. This is ordinary use for an MT 15 in the markets where it sells in numbers, and it is a harder duty cycle than the specification sheet suggests. The Sprint Filter P14 PM198P14 is the fine end of the range for that: dry non-woven, filtering to 14 microns against the standard P08's 80.
Key Features
- Non-woven and dry, never oiled — nothing can travel downstream onto the sensors
- Filtration down to 14 microns; air flow 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Roughly double the filtering surface other performance filters provide
- Fits the standard airbox in place of the original — no modification, no remap
- Washable and reusable, with compressed air from the clean side as the routine
- Two years of warranty, built to last the life of the motorcycle
Sustained load is where a loaded element shows
Restriction costs least when an engine is asking for very little and most when it is asking for everything. A bike used at half throttle on a flat road will tolerate a badly loaded filter for a long time without anybody noticing; the same bike fully loaded on a climb is drawing near the top of what its intake can supply. That is not an argument for more flow — it is an argument for the flow being the same in month eleven as in month one, which is what a washable element delivers and a paper one cannot.
Choosing fineness on an engine with a long life ahead
The trade is stated openly: the P14 passes 1,800 l/m²/sec where the P08 passes 5,050, and it buys a much finer weave with the difference. Fine airborne material is the fraction that reaches the bore and the ring pack; coarse material is caught by anything. On a small single expected to cover very high mileage over many years, moving that barrier finer is a cheap decision with a long payoff — provided the engine has flow to spare, which at these outputs it does. None of this makes the motorcycle quicker, and a description that implied otherwise would be selling something else. A filter can only ever return the restriction it was adding, and on a healthy standard intake that is a small quantity. The point is that it stays small — permanently, because the element is returned to its starting condition.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does the routine work on the PM198P14: clean side, worked outwards, refitted dry. A deeper clean means lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinsing until the water runs clear, then drying fully in air — never with heat, never near a flame. There is no oiling stage anywhere in that. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is kept in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha MT 15 and MT 155 from 2018 to 2026. The same PM198P14 element covers six machines across the 125 and 155 range; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
