Dust is rarely a property of a route. It is a property of four hundred metres of one: the resurfacing works with a gravel bed laid down and not yet swept, the farm entrance covered in dry soil through August, the pass where a run-off channel has emptied itself across the carriageway. Nobody sets out to do dusty riding. They meet it, several times a season, for a couple of minutes at a time, and it is those minutes the medium has to absorb.

Minutes rather than routes

A short heavy exposure is harder on a filter than a long light one, because it arrives faster than the element can spread it. This is where a material with thickness behaves differently from a surface: the load does not all settle in one plane, so the stretch that would visibly grey a panel is absorbed without the same jump in resistance. It is also why the useful question is not how many kilometres have passed but what happened during a handful of them.

What the fine medium costs

The other half is not hidden. Passing 1,800 litres per square metre per second where the P08 passes 5,050 is a substantial reduction in rate, deliberately bought, and finer is not the same as better — it is the same as different. None of it is power, either. A replacement element leaves a standard machine's output where it found it, and the restricted variant answers to a statutory limit well beneath anything the intake could influence. Riders whose year contains no such stretches are better served by the standard weave.

Care and cleaning

The PM175P14 is cleaned dry and put straight back. An air line held to the clean face and worked outward carries the load out the way it arrived, which handles almost every service. What refuses to leave dry will leave in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent, rinsed until nothing more comes away. After that it wants open air and patience, no heat of any kind and no flame, and refitting only once it is dry right through.
