DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08622-80 is a pair of fork springs rated at 8.0 N/mm, 400 mm long with a 36 mm inner diameter. Rate decides where in the stroke the fork sits; damping only decides how fast it gets there.

Key Features

  • 180 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 08622-80
  • Free length 400 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Measured spring rate 8.0 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 36 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

The Numbers That Matter

At 400 mm free length and 36 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

What Fitting Involves

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
