DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 68008-45 is a pair of fork springs rated at 4.5 N/mm, 390 mm long with a 32 mm inner diameter. Too stiff and the front loses feel over bumps; too soft and it dives under the brakes. Rate sets that balance.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 68008-45
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Free length 390 mm
  • Inner diameter 32 mm
  • Measured spring rate 4.5 N/mm

Why the Rate Holds

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 32 mm × 390 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 4.5 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

If the bike rides high and feels harsh over small stuff, the rate is often the reason rather than the damping. At this rate the fork sits deep in its travel under load, which is exactly what a long-travel chassis is designed around. Soft rates like this are what off-road and adventure forks need: the wheel has to follow the ground, not deflect off it. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Installation

Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
