Indicators, All Day
A Scrambler is a town motorcycle as much as anything else. The cancel switch is worked dozens of times before lunch and it is the first control to feel tired.
Three Anodised Options
Black, titanium and red, each grown into the aluminium. On a model sold almost entirely on how it looks, the finish of what sits on the bar is not a trivial matter.
Printed Legends Go First
Ducati applies its markings to the surface of the moulded shell. Four summers on a driveway and they are decorative rather than informative.
Cold Nights, Warm Engine
A bike that lives outdoors cycles through a wide temperature range daily. Plastics take a permanent set under that treatment and machined aluminium is indifferent.
Clips Under Vibration
The original is two moulded halves held together with snap fittings. On an air-cooled twin they lose tension across years and the play does not resolve itself.
Reversible in Twenty Minutes
Nothing is spliced. On a motorcycle bought and sold as frequently as a Scrambler, keeping the harness untouched is worth the small effort.
A Whole Sub-Brand
Ducati gave the Scrambler its own showrooms, its own clothing and its own logo. It reached buyers who had never considered the marque and it worked commercially.
Eleven Years in Production
The 800 has been on sale since 2015 with only detail changes. Very few current motorcycles have run that long unchanged, which says something about how right it was.
Deliberately Simple
No riding modes and no electronic throttle on most versions. That plainness is the model's argument and it makes the quality of the hardware more obvious rather than less.
