Summer is the season a Kawasaki ZX-4R gets ridden, and summer air is not clean air. Pollen, seed and the dust thrown off dry fields and harvest traffic form an organic load that peaks for a few weeks and then disappears, and it is fine enough that a coarse weave passes most of it straight through. A rider who only ever looks at the element in autumn will find it in a condition that the mileage does not explain. The Sprint Filter P14 PM164P14 is the medium for that load: dry non-woven, filtering to 14 microns where the standard P08 works at 80.

A seasonal load needs a seasonal look

The point of a washable element on a bike used this way is not the flow figure, it is that checking costs nothing. A rider can pull the PM164P14 out in the middle of a dusty August, see exactly what the summer has put into it, blow it through and refit it the same afternoon — and do it again in September if the fields are still being worked. That is a habit nobody adopts with a paper element, because every inspection ends in a decision about whether to spend money on a part that still looks usable.

What it will not do to a standard four

It is worth stating plainly that this element does not add power to a standard ZX-4R. The engine is not restricted by its filter, and the P14 is in any case the retention end of the range rather than the flow end — it trades air for fineness deliberately. Anyone chasing intake performance on this bike should be looking at the P08 or the F1-85 racing medium instead. The PM164P14 is bought for the opposite reason: to put a finer barrier in front of an engine that is going to be kept.

Care and cleaning

Through a dusty summer the element wants looking at more often than a calendar interval allows, and compressed air — clean side, outwards, refit dry — is a short job that can be repeated as often as the fields demand. The end of the season is the moment for water: lukewarm, with a mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clear, then dried fully in air. Never with heat, never near a flame.
