The Katana is bought for how it looks as much as for how it rides, and that shows in the way these machines are kept. A lot of them cover modest annual mileage, spend the winter under a cover, and get cleaned more often than they get ridden hard. An airbox does not care about that the way an owner might expect: a filter is not consumed by kilometres alone. Long periods standing let fine dust settle onto the media, and a paper element takes on ambient moisture in an unheated garage. The Sprint Filter P08 PM236S suits a motorcycle that is looked after rather than used up — a part that can be taken out, inspected, blown clean and refitted, year after year.

A motorcycle that stands still still ages

Standing time is its own service interval: dust settles, humidity comes and goes with the seasons, and cellulose media does not enjoy either. The consequence is a machine whose service book looks almost untouched while the element inside is no longer in factory condition. Because the P08 can be inspected and cleaned without buying anything, the spring check becomes something you do rather than something you defer to the next service. For a bike ridden on chosen days in chosen weather, having the intake in known condition on the first ride of the year is worth more than any claimed power figure.

Kept, not consumed

Sprint Filter designs the P08 to last the life of the motorcycle, which reads differently on a machine somebody intends to keep. Over ten or fifteen years of ownership the running total of paper elements is not trivial, and neither is the availability of a part number for a low-volume model. The P08 is a single layer of woven polyester spun from threads of 22 microns and upwards, filtering dry, with roughly double the surface of other performance filters so that low resistance comes from area rather than from a coarser weave. Where the air is dirtier the range weaves finer — P037 at 37 microns, P14 at 14, T12 at 7 — each holding more and flowing less than the P08's 5,050 litres per square metre per second. For a road bike the P08 is the right end of that trade.

Care and cleaning

Each spring ends the same way: compressed air from the clean side outwards, and the PM236S back in dry. Where a winter has left more, wash it in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear and dry it fully in open air — never heat, never a flame.
