Two different motorcycles have been sold under the name R 1200 GS. In 2013 BMW kept the badge and rebuilt what sits beneath it: liquid cooling for the cylinder heads, a new gearbox and a reworked engine bay around them. None of that shows on a parts shelf, which is why the dates on this listing are the specification, not a footnote. An air filter is defined by the housing it seals into, and 2013 is where that housing changed. PM142S is Sprint Filter's dry, washable element for the machine built from then to 2018.
Key Features
- One woven layer of dry polyester, never oiled from new and never re-treated after a wash
- An 80 µm aperture at a rated flow of 5,050 l/m²/sec — the P08 is the road and track medium
- Polyester threads from ø 22 microns; what filters is the gap between them, not the fibre
- Around twice the filtering surface of other performance filters, held in the standard frame
- Fits where the paper panel sat: nothing cut, nothing repositioned, no remap
- Cleaned and used again for the life of the motorcycle, with two years of warranty from purchase
Where a catalogue draws its lines
The same part number then runs forward instead of stopping. It carries on to the 1250 boxer of 2019 to 2023, and it reaches sideways to the R, the RS and the RT. BMW raised the displacement, revised the valve gear and left this housing where it was, so one panel serves nine machines and two engine generations. Read both facts together and the ordering rule falls out: the year in the registration document decides, never the name on the tank. What the part will not do is add power. A drop-in element does not make a standard GS noticeably stronger, because intake, injection and exhaust were signed off as one piece of work.
Dry cloth, and the numbers behind it
The medium is polyester woven in a single layer and used dry: no oil in it when it arrives, none applied after washing, so nothing can be lifted off the element and laid down on the sensors behind it. Sprint Filter's own comparison puts the dry P08 at 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron test particles against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton filter — retention is a proportion rather than a barrier, and dry does not mean loose. The flow figure is quoted per square metre, so the roughly doubled surface inside the standard frame counts for as much as the weave itself.
Care and cleaning
Routine service needs an air line and nothing else: compressed air through the element from its clean face outwards, so the dust leaves as it came. Where a season has left more behind than dust, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will shift it — rinse until the water runs clear, then let it dry fully in moving air. Never with heat and never with a flame, since heat is what ruins polyester. It goes back in dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R 1200 GS built from 2013 to 2018, as a direct replacement in the standard airbox. Nine machines share this element; the complete list, with model years, is in the Fitment tab.
