Manufacture and Tolerance
Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

Choosing 44 N/mm
This is the middle of Öhlins' range — the rate most riders of average weight end up on once sag is set properly. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
How a Rear Spring Works
Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.
Applications
If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.
What Fitting Involves
Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
