It is a thin-film interference effect: a metallic layer only a few hundred nanometres thick, tuned so that light reflecting from its outer surface and light reflecting from its inner surface interfere with each other. Which wavelengths cancel and which reinforce depends on the angle you are looking from — which is why the screen runs green through blue to violet as the helmet turns, and why no photograph of it looks quite like the real thing. Soap bubbles and oil films work the same way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe practical consequences follow from that thinness. A rainbow film is the most delicate coating on any visor: clean it only with a thoroughly soaked microfibre cloth, never dry-wipe it, and keep it in a bag rather than face-down on a table.
