The Middleweight Monster
An 821 cc Testastretta 11 degree engine making 109 hp in a trellis frame, at a weight and a price that made it the volume model. It was the Monster most people actually bought.
Easier Than It Looks
Ducati tuned the 821 for midrange rather than peak output, which made it genuinely usable in traffic. It is the version that persuaded a lot of riders that a Ducati could be an everyday motorcycle.
A Frame From the Seventies
The steel trellis hung from the cylinder heads is an idea Ducati has been refining for fifty years. On the Monster it is also the styling, which is why it has never been replaced by aluminium.
Just the Housing
This replaces the throttle assembly without touching the switch block. It suits an owner whose electrics are healthy and who simply wants better than moulded plastic at the grip.
Where the Tube Runs
The bore is machined rather than formed, which keeps the rotation smooth long after an injection-moulded housing has developed a little play against the grip.
Black Anodised
One finish, converted into the aluminium. The bar on a Monster is one of the most looked-at parts of the motorcycle and restraint generally serves it better than contrast.
Ergal 7075
Roughly double the yield strength of ordinary machined alloy. It matters on a part clamped to a handlebar and expected to remain exactly where it was fitted.
Ridden in Everything
An 821 is frequently its owner's only motorcycle, which means winters, rain and road salt. A one-piece machined body gives none of it a seam to work into.
