A Proper Adventure Bike From Aprilia
Twenty-one inch front wheel, long travel suspension, 204 kilograms wet and 80 hp from the 660 twin. Aprilia built something genuinely capable off road rather than a road bike with a beak.
Detuned for Torque
The parallel twin gives up twenty horsepower to the RS 660 and gains a flatter curve low down. On a loose surface that is worth considerably more than the peak figure would be.
Dust as Well as Water
Off-road use puts fine grit into every joint on a motorcycle. A moulded switch block with a clipped cover collects it; a machined body with sealed elements has nowhere for it to go.
Operated Standing Up
On rough ground the rider is on the pegs with the bars low and the hands at an unusual angle. Controls have to be found in that position too, which is a harder test than any road provides.
Off-Road Modes
The Tuareg lets the rider disable rear ABS and change traction for loose surfaces. Those settings get changed at the start and end of every off-road section, which is a lot of operations from this block.
Black or Titanium
Anodised through the surface. An adventure bike collects scratches as a matter of routine, and anodising dulls at the contact point rather than flaking away from it.
Cut From Solid
Ergal 7075 machined rather than moulded. On a bike that will eventually be dropped, a body with no cover to break is a practical advantage rather than an aesthetic one.
Aprilia's Connector
Pre-wired, so nothing is spliced. That matters more on a machine that gets taken a long way from a workshop than it does on a bike used near one.
