Two Hundred and Twenty-One Kilograms
Wet, which is heavy for a naked bike and stops mattering the moment the throttle is opened.
Discontinued Without a Direct Replacement
Kawasaki moved the naked litre position to the Z H2, which is a very different motorcycle. The Z1000 is missed by people who wanted the simpler thing.
The Reed Assembly
A moulded housing holding one reed per port, bolted to the cylinder head cover and fed by a hose from the airbox. It is the half that physically admits the air.
Machined Rather Than Cast
Turned from billet with the sealing face cut in one operation, which is why it seals on a ring alone rather than needing compound.
On a Naked Kawasaki
Kawasaki leaves the motor exposed on the naked models, so whatever is bolted to it is part of the design whether it was meant to be or not. A turned cover belongs there in a way a blanked-off pipe never does.
Do the Airbox End Too
An open port in the intake is a worse outcome than the system ever was, so both ends need closing in the same session rather than across two.
Why an O-Ring
A machined face against a rubber ring seals reliably and separates cleanly years later. Paper and compound both bond to the head and have to be scraped away.
An Evening Either Way
Whether fitted alone or alongside the electrical half, the access is identical. Doing both at once is simply better value for the same effort.
No Rider Aids to Speak Of
The Z1000 arrived before electronics became compulsory and left before they became universal, which makes it an unusually straightforward motorcycle to work on and to modify.
Four Headers on Display
Kawasaki routed them deliberately as part of the styling, which is either magnificent or excessive depending on the observer. Nobody has ever been neutral about it.
