Gear-Driven Camshafts
The VFR's V4 drives its cams through gears rather than chains, which is expensive, complicated and responsible for the noise the model is remembered for.
A Name With Forty Years Behind It
Honda has built V4 sports tourers under the VFR badge since 1982. The 800 F is the last of them and nothing has replaced it.
Vapour From the Tank
The canister catches it in charcoal and the engine burns it later. It works, and it occupies space under bodywork that is already tightly packed.
The Purge Circuit
Monitored continuously by the ECU. Remove the valve and a fault is stored within seconds of the next start.
Emissions Approval
The system is part of the motorcycle's road registration. Removing it is a modification for closed circuits and the listing does not suggest otherwise.
VTEC, for Better or Worse
Honda's variable valve system brings the second pair of valves in at around six and a half thousand. Opinions about it have never converged and they never will.
Cap What Remains
Open hoses collect dirt and smell of fuel. Blanking them is a few minutes' work and it is the half of the job most often skipped.
Nothing Cut
Honda's own connector throughout. The canister returns for an inspection without any trace of the intervening period.
Six Model Years
The 2017 revision was the last significant update before Honda quietly ended the model. Surviving examples have become steadily more sought after.
Twenty-One Litres and a Shaft
The VFR carries a genuinely useful tank and a shaft drive that asks for nothing beyond an oil change. It was built for people who ride long distances on a schedule, and it is the reason the model retained a following long after the sports touring category stopped being fashionable.
