The Quiet One

Mileage Rather Than Excitement

The Full Extent of It
One plastic vessel, one bracket, one valve and the plumbing between them. Nothing structural and nothing the engine depends on.
Filled Completely
Topping up past the nozzle click pushes liquid fuel into the bed. Hard starting and an uneven idle follow and the cause is rarely suspected.
How the Tank Breathes Afterwards
Fuel drawn out has to be replaced by air coming in. A proper vent fitting handles that; a cut hose behind the swingarm does it badly.
What the Controller Expects
A specific load on a specific circuit. Supplying it is straightforward and skipping it is why improvised removals end up at a dealer.
Variable Valve Timing
Two intake profiles and a sliding camshaft, which gives the boxer drive from very low down and a top end it never previously had.
Space Behind the Engine
Luggage frames and the shock compete for the area the canister occupies. Removing it makes both considerably easier to work with.
Reversible
Canister, bracket and lines all refit in their original positions. Nothing is cut and nothing is consumed.
Two Different Bikes
A road motorcycle and a track motorcycle answer this question differently, and the same model can be either.
Clip-Ons Above the Yoke
BMW mounted them high enough that the RS works for a full day without punishing the rider's wrists. It is a sports tourer that has understood which half of that description matters more.
