The Naked One
BMW dropped the fairing, raised the bars and kept the belt drive. The F800R was the most straightforward of the 800 family and the one that made the least fuss about itself.
Everything Is Visible
Without bodywork, the area behind the engine is on show from beside the motorcycle. A plastic canister and three lines are the least attractive thing there by a considerable margin.
What the Carbon Does
It holds petrol vapour from the tank until a valve draws it into the intake. The bed has a finite capacity and a finite life, and neither is stated anywhere in the service schedule.
Ruined by the Pump
Topping up after the nozzle clicks forces liquid fuel into the carbon. A soaked bed causes hard starting and an uneven idle that owners chase through the fuelling for weeks.
Where the Vent Goes
Routed away from the exhaust and clear of the swingarm, terminating in a fitting rather than a raw hose end. It takes a minute and it matters for years.
Measured at Every Start
Coil continuity on the purge valve is part of the routine self-test. It has no way of telling deletion from a broken wire.
A Third Connecting Rod
BMW balanced the 798 cc twin with a dummy rod rather than a shaft. It is an unusual piece of engineering and it is why the engine feels the way it does.
Not Fitted Everywhere
The system appears only in markets that require it, so an imported bike may already be without it. Checking first saves ordering a part the motorcycle does not need.
Undone Without Trace
A later owner inspecting the bike would find original fasteners and original wiring, with no evidence of the conversion.
Registered Bikes
A motorcycle on the road in a market that mandates the system needs it fitted. This part is for one that is not.
