Two point eight kilograms off, half an hour of work, and the type approval stays intact. Of the two R nineT link pipes Akrapovic builds, this is the easy one — the low-mounted version asks far less of the motorcycle and of the workshop than its high-mounted sibling does.

The Easier of the Two
Akrapovic makes a link pipe for each muffler position on the R nineT. The high-mounted version weighs 2.6 kg, takes ninety minutes and requires the passenger footpegs to come off permanently.
This one weighs a kilogram less, fits in a third of the time, and asks nothing of the pillion accommodation unless the rider chooses to remove it. For an R nineT that stays close to standard, it is the sensible half of the pair.
The One Condition
Akrapovic prints a fitment notice worth reading: if the pillion passenger frame is removed, an additional aluminium muffler holder from BMW's own accessory range must be fitted — BMW part number 77 11 8 536 136.
Plenty of R nineT owners strip the pillion frame off, because the bike looks better without it. Do that and the silencer loses a mounting point, and this is the part that puts it back. It is a BMW item, not an Akrapovic one, so it has to be ordered from a dealer.
Two Point Eight Kilograms
4.4 kg standard to 1.6, which is 64 per cent. As with most road-legal exhaust parts, the saving comes from replacing formed steel with titanium tube rather than from deleting anything the law requires.
On a 222 kg motorcycle it is not transformative, but it comes from low down and behind the engine, and that is a reasonable place to lose it.
The Dyno Data Is Mixed
Akrapovic records peak power falling slightly, from 106.9 PS to 106.4, while separately recording an increase of 1.1 PS at 7,350 rpm. Peak torque also comes out marginally lower — 110.8 Nm against 111 — with a gain of 1.6 Nm at 7,200.
Both readings come from the manufacturer and both stand here. Read together they describe a curve fuller in the upper middle and a hair lower at its two peaks. Nobody should buy this pipe for the numbers.
Why People Do Buy It
Because it is a titanium link pipe that keeps a road approval, and those are rare. An R nineT is a motorcycle people rebuild slowly and ride on the road, and a part that changes the sound and the weight without changing the paperwork suits that exactly.
Thirty Minutes
The pipe sits between the headers and the silencer in the standard low position, with clamps at both ends. It is within reach of a home workshop.
Approved Three Ways
EC and ECE type approval mean no entry in the German vehicle documents. The separate US EPA approval reflects how well the R nineT sold in North America. This is a type approval, not an ABE, and the certificate ships with the part.
