DescriptionThe whole story▼
In a dry summer a cross-country race turns into a dust storm. Following another rider, you see little more than the outline of the bike ahead, and your usual braking markers disappear in the cloud. On a KTM 350 XC-F, KTM's four-stroke cross-country racer between the 250 and the 450, that means braking earlier and more gently than on a clear track. For the 350 XC-F of 2014 to 2021, Accossato builds the B8283, whose short blade suits three fingers and can fold forward if the dust hides one hole too many.
Key Features
- Folding brake lever for the KTM 350 XC-F, 2014 to 2021
- Replaces the stock lever at the front brake master cylinder
- Joint allows the blade to fold forward on impact
- Short blade for three fingers
- Machined from solid Ergal 7075 in Italy
- Black, blue or orange blade, dark base
- Supplied individually
- No German ABE documented; off-road use
Construction and Material Quality
Two things decide how a racing brake lever works for you: where your fingers sit and what happens when it hits the ground. The B8283 answers the first with a short blade for three fingers and the second with a hinge between its dark base and its coloured blade, so the blade can fold. Accossato machines both parts in Italy from solid Ergal 7075, a 7000-series aluminium alloy, and gives strength, low weight and reliability as its reasons.
Riding Blind in the Dust
Dust takes away the information you normally brake by. A hole, a rock or a sharp turn appears only a few metres ahead, and the rider in front may brake without warning. Experienced racers on a 350 XC-F leave more space than they would on a clear day, move slightly off the line of the bike ahead to see past its cloud and keep their fingers covering the front lever all the time. Braking becomes a series of early, controlled squeezes rather than late, hard ones.
When a hidden hole catches the front wheel anyway, the bike usually goes down suddenly. Falls in dust happen at speed and on hard ground, and when the bike lands on its right side, the brake lever is among the first parts to hit. A solid lever may snap. The B8283's joint gives the blade the possibility of folding forward instead, so you may be able to pick up the KTM 350 XC-F, clear your goggles and rejoin the race with a working front brake. A big crash can still break it, but the chance is worth having.
Fitment and Compatibility
The B8283 goes on the KTM 350 XC-F of 2014 to 2021 in place of the standard brake lever. The 2011 to 2013 models are covered on the clutch side only, by the C7283 folding clutch lever, which Accossato lists from 2011 to 2021. Both levers are available in black, blue and orange; red is offered on the clutch lever alone.
Road Approval
No German ABE is on record for the B8283. It is intended, like the 350 XC-F, for off-road riding and competition.
