Air filters are looked after well or badly for one very ordinary reason: how much effort the job takes. A service that needs a workshop appointment gets postponed; a service that needs a bought consumable gets postponed twice. The Sprint Filter P08 PM186S is deliberately at the other end of that scale. The element comes out with the same tools that open the airbox, it is cleaned with compressed air from a line that any tyre shop has, and it goes back in. There is nothing to buy, nothing to apply, and nothing to wait for — which is the practical reason an owner-maintained Jupiter MX tends to keep a clean intake rather than a theoretically clean one.
Key Features
- Compressed air alone brings it back — no oil, no cleaning kit, nothing to buy
- Dry P08 polyester, washed and used again, designed for the life of the motorcycle
- 80 microns of filtration, 5,050 litres per square metre per second of airflow
- Filtering surface about twice what other performance filters carry
- Slots into the standard airbox in place of the original — no modification, no remap, homologation unchanged
- The purchase date starts two years of warranty
The maintenance that has no shopping list
An oiled gauze filter is a two-part product: the element and the oil, plus a cleaner for the old oil. Re-oiling has to be done evenly and in the right quantity, and a filter that has been over-oiled leaves a film downstream, on exactly the surfaces a fuel-injected engine relies on for measurement. There is no correct amount of anything to apply, so there is no way to get it wrong. The one habit worth forming is to look at the element more often than the service book asks — with a washable filter that check costs nothing.
What you are actually maintaining
A filter in a standard airbox does not make a standard motorcycle faster, and any description that says otherwise is selling something. What a clean element does is keep the pressure drop across the intake low and, above all, consistent — so the engine at the end of a service interval breathes much as it did at the beginning. The P08 does that job with a single layer of woven polyester spun from threads of 22 microns and upwards, measured by Sprint Filter at 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron test particles against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton filter.
Care and cleaning
The PM186S is normally serviced with a line of compressed air, played from the clean side outwards. Lukewarm water and a mild detergent are the next step when that is not enough; rinse it through until the water runs clear. Complete drying follows, in open air only — heat is out and so is any flame — and the element is fitted dry. There is nothing to oil at the end, because there was never any oil in the polyester. Look in the Downloads tab for the Sprint Filter maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha Jupiter MX, 2015 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same PM186S element is listed for six model names across that period; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
