The V100 Mandello is a motorcycle that changes with conditions: its aerodynamic deflectors deploy with speed and alter the air moving past the rider. One fixed setting on an adaptable machine

Because the medium cannot be varied on the move, the standard weave is the grade that fits the widest set of days. It is the middle of the range Sprint Filter builds, with a racing cloth above it that passes more air and holds back less, and two closer grades below it that do the reverse. Each step is an exchange rather than an improvement: finer means more retained and less passed, and there is no arrangement in which both improve at once. For a machine used on sealed roads with occasional dust, the standard grade is the one that asks for no compromise on either side.

What the figures are measured against

Sprint Filter publishes a comparison for this material: 93.13 per cent retention of 100-micron particles, against 76.42 per cent for a four-layer oiled cotton element. That is the useful benchmark, because oiled cotton is the alternative most riders are actually weighing. What none of it amounts to is extra power. An element in an unaltered airbox leaves a series V100 Mandello producing what the factory certified, and the real return is an intake resistance that starts low and comes back to the same value after every cleaning instead of climbing until the panel is thrown away.

Care and cleaning

SM239S is cleaned with compressed air, directed from the clean side outward so the trapped load leaves by the face it entered. When air is no longer enough, lukewarm water with a mild detergent will do it; rinse the panel thoroughly and let it dry completely in moving air.
