DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Öhlins KA 739 exists because the Kawasaki Z900 (2017–2024) needed its own settings, not a shared set. A factory shock is set for an average rider on an average road, and few riders are either.

Key Features

  • 69 mm of travel at the damper
  • Gas-pressurised monotube damper with the reservoir integrated into the body
  • Monotube damper layout
  • Built for the Kawasaki Z900 (2017–2024); fits without modification
  • Overall length 350 +4 -2 mm as specified by Öhlins for this model
  • Öhlins fits a 100 N/mm spring to this application
  • Adjustable rebound damping via the knob above the lower eyelet
  • Remote hydraulic spring-preload adjuster on a flexible hose

About the STX 46 Street Range

The unit is serviceable rather than sealed: seals, shims and oil are stock items years after the part number was introduced. Öhlins sets a baseline for every part number on the machine it was developed on, so the shock works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins built the STX 46 Street around a 46 mm damping piston in a monotube body, with the gas reservoir integrated rather than hung off a hose.

How It Behaves on the Road

The adjustable length of 350 +4 -2 mm covers the range a suspension technician would actually use on this chassis. Öhlins fits a 100 N/mm spring to this number; riders far from average weight should expect to change it. A 46 mm piston gives the oil a large working area, so the force curve stays flat as temperature rises. Spring part number 01096-34 is a separate catalogue item, so a rate change is inexpensive. Öhlins publishes a baseline setting for each part number, which is the sensible starting point. Adjustment is by click rather than by feel, so a setting can be written down and returned to.

Materials and Manufacture

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against.

Setting It Up for the Z900

A naked bike is usually ridden on the road rather than the track, and the suspension has to cope with real surfaces. This part number spans model years 2017 to 2024; earlier and later generations take different numbers.

Fitment and Compatibility

Part number KA 739 and the Kawasaki Z900 (2017–2024) belong together; other model years take other numbers. Öhlins releases the same number for 6 closely related machines; this listing is the Kawasaki Z900 version of that fitment. Öhlins lists this fitment under the model designations Z900, Z900 Performance.

Road Approval

Road approval: ABE (Germany). The unit is covered by a German ABE for the Kawasaki Z900, so no individual inspection or entry in the vehicle documents is required. The approval document ships with the product.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
