DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60281-03 is a shock absorber spring rated at 15 N/mm, 150 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 15 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 150 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60281-03

Manufacture and Tolerance

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 150 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 15 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Installation

Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
