The Last Road Generation
Euro 5+ ended European road sales of the R1 after this run, which has made the 2020 to 2025 bikes the final registered examples. A good number are being converted for the circuit precisely because their road value is no longer the point.
Brake Control and Engine Braking
This generation added two intervention systems to an already long list, both of which are worth adjusting as a session progresses and a tyre goes off. The controls behind them are on the left cluster, and they are used at pace rather than in the pits.
Why Removing Buttons Helps
It is not weight. With the indicator and horn positions gone the remaining controls can be spaced further apart, and a thumb counting positions from the top of the housing has fewer chances to miscount.
Standard Wiring
No racing harness and no external dashboard. Yamaha's own connector is used and the factory ECU handles the switch, so every rider aid continues to work exactly as delivered.
Finger Followers and Higher Revs
The 2020 head change let the crossplane four rev harder without valve float, and it is the mechanical reason this generation is preferred for competition over the 2015 bike it evolved from.
Three Anodised Finishes
Black, blue and titanium, all converted into the surface rather than coated on top. A slide dulls the component rather than exposing bright aluminium underneath.
Fitted Between Sessions
Because no racing harness is involved, this cluster goes on with hand tools in a paddock. The old one unplugs, the new one plugs in, and the bike is out for the next group.
Sealed Elements
Contacts sealed inside a one-piece milled body. Track machines meet more water through washing than road bikes meet through weather, and they meet it while still warm.
