A great many XSR 125 cover very little ground in a year and spend the winter under a cover in a garage or a shared bike store. That sounds like the easiest possible life for an air filter, and it is not quite. A parked motorcycle has an open intake with an element across it, and dust settles onto a stationary filter just as willingly as it is drawn into a moving one — more willingly, in a garage where a car is started twice a day. Five idle months leave a mark that no odometer records. The Sprint Filter P14 PM198P14 answers that with a dry non-woven medium at 14 microns that is cleaned instead of replaced.
Key Features
- Dry non-woven medium, never oiled — nothing to gum up or dry out over winter
- 14 microns of filtration at an air flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Filtering surface about double that of other performance filters
- A direct swap for the original in the standard airbox — no modification, no remap
- Washable and reusable; a compressor is the only tool needed
- Two years of warranty, and a design life matching the motorcycle's
Ageing that has nothing to do with mileage
Service intervals are written in kilometres because kilometres are what a workshop can read off the bike, and on a machine that covers two thousand of them a year the figure says almost nothing. Standing time, damp air in an unheated garage and dust from whatever else shares the space all act on an element without moving the clock at all. Paper is particularly poor at that, because it takes on moisture, swells and does not return to what it was. A dry medium is unbothered, and if it does need attention the attention is free.
The check that costs nothing at the start of the season
The natural moment is the first ride of spring. The element comes out, gets blown through from the clean side and goes straight back in — ten minutes, no parts, no waiting. On a bike used seasonally that single habit covers most of what the airbox will ever need, and the PM198P14 is built to last the life of the motorcycle rather than to be renewed at intervals. What it will not do is add power, and a seasonally used 125 is the last place to expect it. The engine is held to its output by mapping and design rather than by its filter, and the P14 trades air for fineness in any case — 1,800 l/m²/sec against the standard P08's 5,050. The value here is a finer barrier and an element that does not quietly deteriorate while the bike is standing still.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean side of the PM198P14, directed outwards, then refit dry. For more than that, lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear, followed by full drying in air — never with heat, never with a flame. Given the choice, store it clean rather than cleaning it in spring; an element put away clean comes out of winter ready. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha XSR 125 from 2021 to 2026. The same PM198P14 element covers six machines across the 125 and 155 range; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
