Choosing a filter medium is not a matter of picking the best one. It is a trade, and the two sides of it pull against each other: the finer the fabric, the more it holds back, and the less air it will pass through the same area. Sprint Filter publishes both figures rather than one, which is what makes the choice an honest one — the P14 filters to 14 microns and flows 1,800 l/m²/sec, while the standard P08 filters to 80 microns and flows 5,050. On a Honda CB400F that is an easy trade to take. A 399 cc parallel twin ridden on the road lives in the middle of its rev range and never asks for the top of anybody's flow curve, so the headroom the P14 gives up is headroom this engine was not using in the first place.
Key Features
- A special non-woven fabric that works dry and is never oiled, so nothing off it travels downstream to a sensor or a throttle body
- 14 microns of filtration at 1,800 l/m²/sec — the fine end of the Sprint Filter range
- Twice the filtering area of a typical performance element, in round terms
- Takes the place of the standard element in the standard airbox: nothing modified, nothing remapped, homologation as it was
- The routine service is compressed air from the clean side, and nothing is thrown away afterwards
- Built to last the life of the motorcycle and warranted for two years
Reading the two numbers together
A filtration figure on its own says nothing about whether an element suits a particular bike, and a flow figure on its own says nothing about whether it protects the engine. The P08 sits where most road riding is comfortable. The P14 moves the balance deliberately towards retention and pays for it in flow. On a road-ridden 400 twin, with an intake nowhere near its limit, the question worth answering is usually what gets past the filter, not how much gets through it.
What the CM220P14 does not promise
It will not make a standard CB400F faster, and no bolt-in element will. What a clean, generously dimensioned filter does is hold intake restriction low and — more usefully — hold it low for longer. A paper element climbs steadily in restriction as it loads and never comes back down; a washable one is returned to its starting condition at every service. The honest benefit is an intake that behaves the same in month eleven as in month one, and a part that is cleaned instead of bought again.
Care and cleaning
It is never oiled — not when new, not after a wash. Routine care is compressed air from the clean side of the CM220P14, worked outwards. If a hard season has earned it, lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear, then dried right through in open air. Heat and flames stay away from it, and it goes back into the airbox dry. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Honda CB400F from 2019 to 2026. The same CM220P14 element covers six machines across the 400 and 500 twin range, which is why it stays easy to find long after any single variant has left a showroom. The complete list is in the Fitment tab.
