A filtration specification is not really priced at the till. Whatever a coarser medium lets through is charged to the engine standing behind it, and the ZXR-14 Ninja carries the largest engine in Kawasaki's listing: 1,400 cm³ of four-cylinder, built to be used hard and expensive to put right. That does not disqualify the PM161S F1-85. It does mean the argument for fitting it has to be correspondingly stronger than a line on a data sheet, because the same specification carries a different consequence depending on what sits downstream of it.
Key Features
- Racing-grade dry polyester at 85 microns, used without oil like every medium in the range
- 15,000 l/m²/sec of airflow — the highest figure Sprint Filter quotes, three times that of the P08
- Retention of 95.22 per cent on 100-micron particles against 93.13 per cent for the standard medium
- About double the working surface of a conventional performance element
- Replaces the paper panel in the untouched airbox: no modification, no remap
- Cleaned and refitted indefinitely, with a two-year warranty
The same trade at a much larger stake
Read the media as a line rather than a ranking and this becomes easy to think about. Every step towards more airflow is a step towards a coarser aperture, and the aperture applies to every litre of air the engine takes for as long as the element is in the box. On a small commuter, being wrong about that is inexpensive. On a 1,400 four it is not, which is why the reasonable owner of one asks what the extra airflow is being bought for before asking what it costs. The answer has to be a use, not a number.
Where it belongs, and where the P08 does
The F1-85 earns its place on a machine run in closed-course or straight-line competition, with the servicing that goes with it: oil changed on event intervals, the airbox opened routinely, the panel cleaned rather than forgotten. Under those conditions the coarser weave is covered. For a ZXR-14 that is ridden on the road, the standard P08 in the same shape is the better cross, and it sacrifices nothing an owner will feel — because a drop-in element does not make a standard ZXR-14 noticeably stronger. It keeps the restriction low and, more usefully, keeps it constant.
Care and cleaning
The PM161S F1-85 is cleaned dry: compressed air held against the clean face, worked along the panel, so that whatever the weave has caught leaves through the side it entered. Stubborn deposits come off with lukewarm water and a trace of mild detergent, then a rinse until the water is clear. Drying is done by air movement alone — a heat gun, a radiator or an open flame will finish the polyester for good. The panel is refitted dry, with nothing applied to it. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the standard airbox of the Kawasaki ZXR-14 Ninja + ABS built from 2012 to 2026. Two entries share this panel, the ZXR-14 Ninja + ABS and the ZZR 1400 + ABS, covering the same fifteen model years. Both appear in the Fitment tab.
