This motorcycle's year has a shape to it. It is ridden on warm evenings and dry weekends from spring to autumn and it stands for the rest, which gives its air filter a very particular diet: pollen, cut grass, harvest dust and the fine mineral dust of a dry summer road — and almost nothing of the salt and wet grit a year-round machine lives in.

A seasonal load, and mostly an organic one

Summer air over open country is full of material that is light, fibrous and produced in bursts by whatever is happening in the fields that week. It arrives in quantity for a few weeks and then stops. That is a different pattern from the steady mineral and metallic loading of a commuting machine, and it means the state of a Diavel's element has far more to do with which weeks it was ridden than with the total on the odometer. Two identical machines with identical readings can be in quite different condition inside the airbox.

Clean it by the season, then

The useful moment is the end of the summer, before the bike goes away — not a mileage figure, which for this machine describes almost nothing. An air line at that point clears the year's load, the cloth goes back to where it started, and the motorcycle is stored with a known intake rather than an unknown one. It costs minutes, because PM160S is regenerated rather than bought again. And to be plain about the rest: no drop-in element makes a standard Diavel V4 any quicker, and this one is not offered on that basis.

Care and cleaning

Put compressed air to the clean face and work outward until the weave gives nothing further up. Once the season has been long enough to need it, wash the element in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the run-off is clear, and let it dry completely in moving air — no heater, no hot-air gun, no flame at any point.
