mt-helmets-track-sv-questor-b9-matt-sand-helmet
MT-Helmets Track SV Questor B9 Adventure Helmet – Matt Sand

The Track SV is the only helmet MT Helmets makes that carries an independent safety rating. SHARP — the UK Department for Transport's testing programme — gives it four stars out of five. Questor B9 is that helmet in matt sand and khaki, with a peak, and it is the one we would point an adventure rider at first.

What four SHARP stars actually means

SHARP buys helmets anonymously at retail and destroys 32 of each model across seven impact sites at three speeds, then publishes a rating from one to five. It is not a pass mark — every helmet it tests has already passed ECE — it is a comparison of how much energy each one absorbs beyond that.

Four stars puts the Track SV in the upper band, above a great many helmets costing several times as much. And the honest caveat: SHARP rates linear impact absorption. It does not measure rotational loading, comfort, noise or how a helmet ages. It is one strong signal, not the whole picture.

One more thing worth saying plainly: this rating belongs to the Track SV alone. No other MT model in our range shares it, and we do not lend it to them.

About the Questor B9 finish

Matt. The base is a warm sand beige broken by khaki-brown and grey panels that run diagonally across the flank, with QUESTOR lettered in tonal type along the side. The peak and the chin bar are the darker tone; the MT logo sits in cream on the flank.

Sand is an unusually sensible colour on an adventure helmet. Dust does not show on it — which is the single most common thing an adventure helmet gets covered in — and a light shell runs measurably cooler under a summer sun than a black one.

The peak, and what it costs

The Track SV wears a proper adventure peak. It shades your eyes when the sun is low and ahead, it keeps roost off the visor on a gravel road, and it is a large part of why this helmet looks the way it does.

It also catches air. Above roughly 120 km/h with your head turned, a peak generates lift and a side load that a plain full-face does not, and on a naked bike in a headwind that becomes tiring. Every adventure helmet has this trade — it is not a fault of this one — and it is the reason we would not recommend a peaked helmet to someone whose riding is mostly motorway.

Goggles or visor

The helmet takes the HS-12 visor, and the eye port is cut to also accept goggles with the visor removed.

That is the whole dual-sport argument in one detail. Visor for the ride out, goggles for the trail, one helmet for both. The visor comes off without tools.

ERS — the emergency release system

The Track SV has ERS: red tabs that let a first responder pull both cheek pads out sideways, so the helmet can be eased off a casualty without the head being lifted or twisted.

This is the feature nobody thinks about when buying and everybody wants afterwards. Off-road and on remote roads you are the rider most likely to be found by someone with no medical training, and a helmet that comes off in stages rather than in one pull is a genuinely different object in that moment. The Braker and Stinger in our range do not have it. This one does.

ECE 22.06 — and no DOT

The Track SV clears ECE 22.06, the current European standard: 18 impact points rather than the 22.05's five, several speeds, an oblique impact against an abrasive anvil for rotational loading, and a Brain Injury Criterion limit.

Unlike MT's jets, no DOT marking is published for this model, and we do not claim one. If you need DOT for a specific reason, check before ordering.

The MT-ESP sun visor

A retractable MT-ESP sun visor is built in, with an extended coverage field.

On an adventure helmet the shade earns its keep in a specific way: trail riding puts you in and out of tree shadow constantly, and stopping to change a screen every time is not realistic. A shade you can drop and lift with a thumb without taking a hand far off the bar is the right tool for that.

Anti-fog

The HS-12 is prepared for Pinlock DKS 623 and for FogOff inserts. Neither is supplied.

Worth budgeting for if you ride off-road in the cold. Slow, effortful riding produces a great deal of breath and very little airflow, which is the exact condition in which a visor fogs — and a fogged visor on a rocky descent is worse than one on a motorway.

The liner

Removable and washable, in an antibacterial quick-drying fabric.

That is not marketing on this model specifically. An adventure helmet gets more sweat into it than a road helmet does, because the riding is physical and often slow, and quick-dry fabric is what lets you wash a liner in the evening and ride the next morning on a trip.

Retention, and why the double tooth is there

The strap closes on a micrometric ratchet with a double tooth. The single-tooth objection to ratchets is real — a strap fastened on one notch can walk loose under vibration — and a second engaged tooth is the structural answer to it.

There is a reason this matters more off-road than on. Vibration on a corrugated gravel road is an order of magnitude worse than anything tarmac produces, and it is exactly the condition that persuades a marginally fastened strap to let go. Set it one notch tighter than feels necessary before a trail section.

What it does not have

No DOT marking published.

No Pinlock insert supplied — the visor is prepared for one.

No goggles supplied.

A peak costs you at speed.
