ls2-ff902-scope-ii-oxyd-black-titanium-helmet
LS2 FF902 Scope II Oxyd Black Titanium – Modular Touring Helmet ECE 22.06 P/J

Oxyd is the softer of the two Scope II graphics — where Duria cuts the shell into blocks, Oxyd washes across it, with edges that fade rather than stop. In this gloss version the effect is closest to weathered metal, which is what the name is reaching for, and it is the graphic that changes most depending on the light it is standing in.

Three shells for seven sizes

Three shells, seven sizes, XS through 3XL. It is worth being clear about what this does not fix, because shell count is often oversold. Three tools solve size; they do not solve shape. A head that is long front-to-back will still feel pressure at the brow in an intermediate-oval helmet regardless of how many shells the range uses. Shell count decides proportion, weight and EPS thickness. Cheek pads and honest measurement decide fit.

About the Oxyd gloss finish

A graphic built on gradients rather than edges is harder to print and much harder to get right, because there is nothing for the eye to lock onto and any banding in the transition shows immediately. Oxyd works because the transitions run along the shell rather than across it, following the airflow lines, so the helmet still reads as a single form. Gloss is the correct choice for it: a clear coat adds depth to a gradient in a way matt cannot, and the graphic gains a sense of being under the surface rather than on it. In practice it is also the most flattering finish here on a helmet that will collect the usual marks — a soft-edged pattern absorbs a scuff visually far better than a hard block edge, which shows any interruption at once. Clean it as you would any gloss finish, with a wet cloth rather than a dry one.

HPTT: what the shell actually is

One property of a thermoplastic shell is genuinely useful and rarely mentioned: it is very good at resisting a sharp, concentrated impact. A stone, a kerb edge, a footpeg — the sort of thing that concentrates all its energy into a few square centimetres. A stiff composite can crack under that; a polymer that yields locally tends to dent and hold. It is the least glamorous kind of protection and it is the kind a dropped helmet actually meets.

Ninety degrees, not one hundred and eighty

Two things keep a modular chin bar working for years, and both are maintenance rather than design. Grit in the pivots is the first: a rinse with clean water after a wet, salted winter ride does more than any lubricant. The second is not forcing the bar past its stop when it is stiff — that is what bends the ratchet and what turns a five-euro part into a new chin bar. The mechanism parts are all available separately.

What ECE 22.06 and the P/J label actually mean

The plaque riveted to the strap represents a test regime that changed substantially in 2021. Five impact points became as many as eighteen. Single-speed testing became multi-speed. And an entirely new oblique test was added, measuring rotational acceleration rather than straight-line deceleration — the injury mechanism that European regulation had ignored for decades.

Alongside it sits the dual P/J homologation. Two separate certifications: the helmet as a protective full-face, and the helmet as a jet with the bar up. Both apply to this shell, which is what makes the open configuration on a Scope II a certified state rather than an improvisation.

Where it sits — and what SHARP actually tested

Set against the rest of what we sell, the Scope II occupies a specific spot: the least expensive way into a P/J-homologated modular helmet with a sun visor and a Pinlock insert in the box. The table shows what the alternatives weigh and cost. It does not show a features column, because there would be nothing to put in it.

Regarding SHARP — their database lists an FF902 Scope at three of five stars. The entry is dated May 2022 and describes an ECE 22.05 helmet of 1.65 kg in six sizes. The Scope II is a 22.06 model at 1750 g across seven sizes and three shells. We treat that as a different helmet, because it is one.

Model

Type

Shell

Weight

RRP

FF820 Rapid III

Full-face

HPTT

1350 g

from 99 €

FF902 Scope II

Flip-up (P/J)

HPTT

1750 g

from 179 €

FF906 Advant

Flip-up (P/J)

KPA

1750 g

from 299 €

FF901 Advant X

Flip-up (P/J)

HPFC

1600 g

from 399 €

FF901 Advant X Carbon

Flip-up (P/J)

Carbon 6K

1550 g

from 469 €

COOLMAX, and where the air goes

The chin vent is the one to use when the visor mists, and it is worth knowing why. Fogging happens when the inside face of the visor drops below the dew point of your breath; blowing outside air directly onto that face raises its temperature and moves the moisture on. Opening the top vents does very little for fog. Opening the chin vent does almost all of it.

Behind that, the front intake feeds channels through the multi-density EPS to the rear exhaust, and the interior is COOLMAX — capillary-channelled fibre that pulls sweat off the skin, laser-cut, hypoallergenic, removable and washable.

The visor, the sun visor and the Pinlock in the box

The visor aperture on a modular helmet has to seal against a chin bar that moves, which is a harder sealing problem than on a full-face and the reason cheap flip-ups whistle. Here the screen carries a hardcoat against scratches, UV stabilisation against yellowing, and a quick-release mechanism designed to be operated at the roadside rather than on a bench.

Getting the helmet off a fallen rider

On a modular helmet the retention system and the chin-bar latch are two different things, and it is worth keeping them separate in your head. The strap holds the helmet on your head. The latch holds the chin bar shut. ECE 22.06 tests both, and a failure of either is a different kind of problem. The strap here is reinforced with a micrometric metal-toothed ratchet; the latch was redesigned for this generation.

1750 grams, noise, and the rest of the honest list

Where this helmet asks something of you. It is heavy: 1750 g is joint-highest in our range, which on a long day is felt as a dull ache rather than as effort. It has no test result of its own. And its chin bar opens to ninety degrees, so it is a helmet you open at stops rather than one you ride open through a town.

Wind noise is not quoted because it has not been measured for this model. The honest structural note is that a modular seals against a moving part and therefore leaks more than a full-face; the chin curtain in the accessory list is the cheapest thing you can do about it.

When something wears out

Everything replaceable on this helmet is listed under the FF902 Scope II Kit, and it is a longer list than most helmets at this price offer — complete interior in all seven sizes, chin bar, ratchet mechanism and cover, four vent covers, chin curtain, chin strap cover, nose guard, six visors, two sun visors and the Pinlock lens.
