Sold to Be Raced
Öhlins suspension, forged wheels and numbered batches. The RF was bought by people who intended to use it properly, and a good many of them eventually fitted data systems.
Wired to the Display
The signals from this block are read by the I2M unit rather than by the motorcycle. Function assignment happens in software, which is the point of running a system like this at all.
Two Hundred and One Horsepower
The final development of the 999.6 cc V4, reached without ever enlarging the engine. Aprilia found twenty-one horsepower in intake, camshaft and electronics work across nine years.
The Loom Comes First
This block belongs at the end of an installation that already has a racing harness and a dashboard. Fitted to a standard bike it has nowhere to send a signal.
Black Anodised
One finish, converted into the surface. Race motorcycles are cleaned hard and stored badly, and anodising handles both better than any coating would.
Sealed Elements
Military-specification switches enclosed in the machined body. Competition switchgear meets more water in a season than a road bike's does in several years.
Rebuilt Repeatedly
A race bike is taken apart between rounds as a matter of routine. A part cut from solid tolerates that indefinitely; a moulded one with clips does not.
Intake Trumpets That Move
The V4 varies its intake length with revs, filling the midrange without costing peak power. On a circuit it shows up as drive out of a slow corner rather than as a dyno figure.
Numbered and Kept
RF machines were sold in defined runs with a plate on the yoke, which has held their values firmly and kept a surprising number of them in active use. They are the RSV4s most likely to be found in a paddock a decade after they were sold.
