An Underseat Exhaust
On the early bikes, which looked right and put weight in the wrong place. Triumph moved it to the side with the 2013 redesign and the handling improved.
A New Frame in 2013
Shorter, lighter and with the exhaust relocated. It is a genuinely different motorcycle from the first generation despite sharing a name and a capacity.
Gear and Stand Together
The controller reads both and acts only when they disagree. A neutral gearbox with the stand down is perfectly acceptable to it.
The Switch Leaves With It
It is bolted to the bracket, so there is no way to keep one without the other. The engine then refuses to run with a gear engaged.
Five Minutes
One connector near the swingarm pivot, reached without removing bodywork. It is the quickest job on any preparation list and the one that unlocks the rest.
Why the Position Is Unavoidable
The switch has to sense the stand, so it has to live where the stand lives, which is the lowest and dirtiest part of the motorcycle. No manufacturer has found a better answer and Triumph is not alone in the compromise.
Pressure Washing Is the Enemy
A lance aimed at the swingarm pivot drives water directly into the connector, and the corrosion that follows takes a season to show itself. It is the single most common cause of premature failure on any bike of any marque.
A Fault With a Pattern
It appears in the wet, in winter, or after a wash, and it disappears in the workshop. Anything intermittent that correlates with water is worth tracing to a connector before anything is replaced, and this connector is the most exposed one on the motorcycle.
Where the Lead Runs
Forward along the frame rail from the stand bracket to a connector under the bodywork. Nothing in this conversion touches that run.
