What BMW Fits and Why
A canister of activated carbon holds the petrol vapour that a warm tank produces, and a purge valve later meters it into the intake to be burnt. It exists to satisfy a test and it does nothing else at any point.
Not on Every Bike
BMW fits the system in markets that require it and leaves it off elsewhere, which is why two apparently identical machines can have quite different plumbing behind the engine.
The Belt Drive Sports Bike
The F 800 S used a toothed belt rather than a chain, which is quiet, clean and almost maintenance free. It also made the bike unusual enough that owners still seek them out.
Where the Assembly Sits
Under the tank and behind the engine, with three lines and a mounting bracket. On a bike this narrow the space it occupies is worth more than the component in it.
Filling to the Neck
Continuing to pump after the nozzle clicks pushes liquid fuel into the carbon. Once the bed is soaked the bike starts badly and idles unevenly, and no service interval addresses it.
A Correct Vent
The tank still has to equalise, so the kit supplies the fitting that lets it do so cleanly rather than through a hose left dangling.
The Purge Circuit
The valve is monitored electrically, so unplugging it alone writes a fault into memory. Completing the circuit leaves nothing to find.
An Eight Hundred With a Balancer Rod
BMW balanced the parallel twin with a third connecting rod rather than a shaft, which is an unusual solution and gives the engine a character no other 800 twin has.
Reversible
Canister, bracket and lines all refit in their original positions. Nothing is cut and nothing is consumed.
Type Approval
Evaporative control is part of the approval in the markets that require it, and removing it moves the motorcycle into competition use there.
What Is Removed
The vessel, its bracket, the purge valve and every line joining them to the tank and the intake.
