DescriptionThe whole story▼
On a long downhill the front brake is not the only tool available. Riders who cover mountain roads quickly on a BMW R 1200 GS use the engine and the rear pedal to carry part of the load, saving the front for the corners that need it. That asks more of the rear pads than a commute ever will. Accossato lists the AGPA92 for the 2013 to 2018 GS in the EV1 street/track compound, a material described as giving excellent grip on the road and enough for amateur track use, which is a fair summary of how such riders treat the bike.
Key Features
- Rear pads for the BMW R 1200 GS, 2013 to 2018, in the EV1 street/track compound
- Article number AGPA92EV1, the sporting material in the AGPA92 shape
- Intended for quick road riding and club-level track days
- Two pads in the box; the rear wheel has a single caliper
- Also produced as OR, ST, EV2 and ZXC on the same plate
- The matching front pad is the AGPA177, and the DK006 disc belongs to the same range
- Accossato: high stopping power, slow wear, limited heat build-up
- No German ABE documented; track and competition use
Construction and Material Quality
EV1 street/track occupies the middle ground of Accossato's programme, and the company's wording for it names both halves of that ground. At the rear of a heavy machine the useful half is the one about repeated use: a rear pad that is being asked to help slow the bike, rather than merely to steady it, has to keep its bite when the disc behind the wheel has been working for several minutes without a pause. Accossato points to limited heating as the reason its materials do not fade. The rest is standard across the range, two pads to a box, one box to a caliper, and at the rear of a GS that means a single purchase.
Sharing the Work on a Long Descent
Coming down a long gradient on a big bike is a question of management. The classic mistake is to hold a high gear and lean on the front brake the whole way, which loads the front pads with every metre of the descent. The alternative is to drop a gear so the engine takes a share, brush the rear pedal to keep the speed from building between corners, and reserve the front lever for the bends themselves. Done well, none of the three gets hot enough to matter. On the R 1200 GS this works particularly neatly, because the shaft drive gives a smooth engine brake and the chassis stays composed when the rear is trailing. It does mean that the rear pads earn their keep on a descent, so riders who spend their summers in the mountains should look at rear pad thickness at the same intervals as the front, rather than assuming the back of the bike looks after itself.
Fitment and Compatibility
The application list for this pad reads R 1200 GS, 2013 to 2018, rear wheel, and no other machine. One box is enough for a full change, and the two pads belong in the caliper together. If the bike is used mostly for errands, the OR material is the calmer choice; ST is the all-weather touring option; EV2 and ZXC take the same plate into competition. Accossato covers the front of this GS with the AGPA177 pad and also catalogues the DK006 disc for the model.
Road Approval
An approval document for the AGPA92EV1 has never been supplied to us and no German ABE exists. We sell the pad for circuit riding and competition only.
Scope of Delivery
A box of two AGPA92 pads in the EV1 street/track compound, which completes the rear caliper.
