Triumph built this Speed Triple R for two model years, 2016 and 2017, wedged between the generation that ended in 2015 and the RS that took over in 2018. A run that short is exactly the window in which an air filter order goes wrong: the name on the tank did not change, so it is easy to assume the part behind it did not change either. Sprint Filter draws the line at 2016. The earlier R is covered by a different element; the 2016 and 2017 machines take the PM193S, and once that is right it stays right, because a P08 is cleaned and refitted rather than bought again.
Key Features
- Single-layer woven polyester, run dry — no oil in the medium, so nothing can migrate onto the throttle bodies or the air-mass sensor
- Filtration at 80 µm with a rated flow of 5,050 l/m²/sec, the balance Sprint Filter settled on for road and track use
- The 22 micron figure is the diameter of the polyester thread, not the width of the aperture between threads
- Twice the material inside the same housing, because area is what carries flow when the weave stays this fine
- Goes into the standard airbox in the factory element's place, with nothing cut, packed or reprogrammed
- Backed for two years from purchase, and specified to last as long as the motorcycle does
Order by year, not by badge
The 1050 triple wore the Speed Triple name for a long time and changed underneath it more than once, which makes the model name a poor way to buy consumables for it. Sprint Filter groups three machines under the PM193S: this R from 2016 and 2017, the RS built from 2018 to 2020, and the S sold across the whole 2016 to 2020 span. Anything earlier sits under a different part number. Work from the registration year rather than the badge — and if the bike has recently changed hands, take the old element out and compare before ordering.
What you are actually buying
Not power. A drop-in element cannot make a homologated 1050 triple noticeably stronger, and any description that promises it is selling something other than a filter. What changes is how the intake behaves over time. A cellulose element leaves the box at its lowest resistance and climbs from there until it is thrown away; the P08 starts low and returns to that starting point every time it is cleaned.
Care and cleaning
The PM193S is serviced with an air line held against the clean face, so the dust travels back out through the dirty side it came in by. Nothing is oiled at any stage. Once a season, or after a filthy one, wash it in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent and rinse until the water runs clear. Let it dry in open air, well away from heaters, hot air guns and any kind of flame, and refit it only once it is dry through. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Triumph Speed Triple R, 2016 and 2017. The same element covers three machines built around this airbox: this R, the Speed Triple RS of 2018 to 2020 and the Speed Triple S of 2016 to 2020. The full list with model years is in the Fitment tab.
