Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.
The Numbers That Matter

Choosing 90 N/mm
This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Rate and the Linkage
Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary.
Installation
Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.
Road Approval
