DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 01096-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- 96 mm of usable stroke
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Free length 190 mm
- Öhlins part number 01096-21
- Powder-coated yellow
- Inner diameter 57 mm
- Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
Manufacture and Tolerance
Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.
Dimensions
The 57 mm bore and 190 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 75 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
Where This Rate Belongs
A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
How a Rear Spring Works
Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.
Applications
Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.
Installation
Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
