DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 05622-17 is a shock absorber spring rated at 65 N/mm, 320 mm long with a 74 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.
Key Features
- Powder-coated yellow
- Öhlins part number 05622-17
- Free length 320 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 175 mm of usable stroke
- Inner diameter 74 mm
- Measured spring rate 65 N/mm
Manufacture and Tolerance
Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.
The Numbers That Matter
The 74 mm bore and 320 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 65 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
What This Rate Does
Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.
Applications
The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.
What Fitting Involves
Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
