How Öhlins Makes Them
Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement.

Choosing 100 N/mm
Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
How a Rear Spring Works
Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.
Applications
The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
Installation
Öhlins part numbers are stamped on the packaging rather than the spring, so keep the label with the setup notes. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
