Where It Sits
Öhlins publishes 3.1 mm, 1.6 mm, NBR 70 for 00338-14 — the dimensions are the identity of the part. Nitrile, Viton and PTFE behave differently with temperature, and Öhlins picks per position. An oil seal that has hardened lets the shaft pass oil past it, and the damping fades long before the leak becomes visible. Öhlins specifies the compound by position: NBR where oil is the concern, FKM where heat is.
Why the Original
Öhlins supports its suspension with individual service parts, which is why a fifteen-year-old damper can still be rebuilt to specification. Öhlins supports units that are decades old, which is why the spare parts list runs to thousands of numbers. The Öhlins exploded view names the number for each position; we can look it up if you do not have it. Service parts are supplied per piece unless the description says otherwise.
Identifying the Right Part
00338-14 is the Öhlins number for this position — the same one printed in the service documentation. inner diameter 3.1 mm, cross section 1.6 mm, material NBR 70 is what distinguishes this number from its neighbours in the range. The dust seal does the hard work: it keeps the grit that would score the shaft away from the oil seal. Öhlins uses seals with a spring-loaded lip so they follow the shaft as it wears.
Fitting and Setup Service
A damper rebuild is workshop work: it needs the unit dismantled, the shim stack rebuilt in the correct order and the gas charge reset. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and do exactly that in house — send us the unit or ask us to fit the part with your order.
