Seventeen Inch Wheels
The Versys 1000 makes no claim about serious off-road use and never has. It is a fast road motorcycle with long travel and a fairing.
Twenty-One Litres
Enough for a genuine four hundred kilometres, which is the number that decides whether a touring motorcycle is usable across a country.
An Open Circuit
That is all the electronics see, and they cannot distinguish it from a deployed stand or a broken wire. All three produce identical behaviour.
A Bent Bracket Looks Identical
A drop on the left can move the switch out of position without damaging it, and the symptoms are the same as a failure. Checking alignment first costs nothing.
What the Manual Omits
Kawasaki documents the switch as a replaceable part and says nothing about removing the stand entirely. The answer is that the engine stops in gear, which is exactly what the system is designed to do.
The Connector, Not the Switch
More often than not it is the plug that gives up rather than the mechanism. Cleaning it and packing it with grease sometimes buys another year.
Fitted First, Always
Until the engine runs with a gear engaged nothing else on the preparation list can be verified. It is the job that unlocks the evening.
Carrying One as a Spare
Riders heading somewhere remote sometimes carry a replacement switch. An eliminator weighs less, costs less and solves the problem permanently, which is why several end up in tool rolls rather than fitted.
Twenty-One Litres
The Versys 1000 carries enough fuel for a genuine four hundred kilometres, which is what makes it usable as a touring motorcycle rather than merely a tall one with a fairing.
