What Secondary Air Is For
Injecting fresh air into the exhaust ports so leftover fuel burns in the header rather than leaving the pipe. It is an emissions device and it does its job well.
Why It Goes on a Race Bike
Because it interferes with honest fuelling and because a machine that never sees a public road has no reason to carry emissions equipment at all.
The Lambda Problem
Oxygen arriving after combustion makes the sensor report a lean mixture that does not exist. Every fuelling decision downstream of that reading is then wrong.
A Fault Within Seconds
The ECU checks the solenoid at every start. Without an eliminator the warning appears immediately and stays until something supplies the expected circuit.
Half of the Job
The head ports need a cover as well. Doing only the electrical half leaves air still reaching the exhaust and only the warning silenced, which helps nobody.
Type Approval
The system is part of what makes the bike road legal. This is a closed-circuit modification and there is no point suggesting otherwise.
A Cup Bike
Yamaha runs one-make R3 series in several countries. Those machines are prepared to a common specification and the PAIR system is among the first things off.
Twelve Thousand Revs
The 321 cc twin makes its 42 horsepower right at the top, which is why the R3 teaches riders to keep the engine spinning rather than to short-shift.
Nothing Cut
The original connector is used. Everything returns to standard for an inspection in a matter of minutes.
Sold Everywhere
The R3 is built in Indonesia and sold on every continent, which has produced an enormous parts supply and a global community of people racing them. Very few small-capacity motorcycles have that kind of support behind them.
