This is the part that keeps an exhaust legal. A catalytic converter is not an upgrade, it is the condition on which a type approval rests, and on an Akrapovic system for the ZZR1400 it is a separate purchase rather than something built in.

Why It Is a Set of Two
Kawasaki's 1,441 cc inline four splits its exhaust into two paths, each of which needs its own converter. P-KAT-054 is simply two P-KAT-052 units boxed together, and both are needed for a complete installation.
Buying a single converter for this motorcycle would leave half the exhaust untreated, which is why Akrapovic sells the pair under its own number.
What Is Actually Inside
A metal honeycomb with precious metals bonded to its surface — palladium, rhodium and platinum. Exhaust gas passing across those surfaces has its carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons converted into carbon dioxide and water vapour.
The precious metal content is most of what the price reflects. It is also why a converter is not a part to buy used or from an unfamiliar source: the coating is the product, and it cannot be seen.
Performance-Oriented, Not Restrictive
Akrapovic states that it uses performance-oriented converters designed to deliver the sound and performance its systems are known for. A converter is always a restriction; the engineering question is how small a restriction it can be while still doing its job.
That is the difference between this and a generic replacement unit, and it is why the Akrapovic system's published figures assume the Akrapovic converter.
When You Need It
If an Akrapovic system for this motorcycle is sold with the type approval conditional on a catalytic converter being installed, this is the converter that condition refers to. Without it the system has no valid approval on a public road.
It is equally the part to order when an original converter has failed after high mileage and the motorcycle needs to pass its next inspection.
Not an Exhaust
To be clear about what is in the box: two converters and nothing else. No muffler, no link pipe, no header. This part completes an exhaust rather than being one.
The Machine
The ZZR1400, sold as the ZX-14R in some markets, was Kawasaki's hyper-tourer and one of the fastest production motorcycles of its era. The 2016 to 2020 machines are the last of the line, and they are kept and maintained rather than traded quickly.
