The S D|air is the most thoroughly equipped Multistrada of its generation, and almost everything that distinguishes it corrects something in real time: suspension that reads the road, traction and wheelie control that read the wheels, a link to the rider's jacket that reads an accident before the rider does. All of it acts on events. None of it acts on what has already gone through the airbox, because there is no sensor for abrasion and no strategy that undoes it. The Sprint Filter T12 PM127T12 addresses the one part of the machine nothing else compensates for: a dry polyester special non-woven filtering to 7 microns, specified for off-road use and extreme conditions.

What the electronics cannot correct

Rider aids act on things that are still happening. A slipping rear wheel can be caught, a soft damper firmed in milliseconds, an unfolding accident met with an airbag. Wear is not an event; it is a total, accumulated quietly by particles small enough to stay suspended and hard enough to matter when they arrive. No control unit on a Multistrada holds an opinion about it. So the choice of medium sits entirely with the owner — one of very few decisions left on a motorcycle this well instrumented where the outcome depends on a part rather than a parameter.

The size of the trade

Handing this much filtration to the engine costs flow, and the amount is not small. Sprint Filter's standard P08 weave filters at 80 microns and carries a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec; this non-woven filters at 7 microns and is rated at 560, roughly one ninth of the air for a given area of material. That is the widest step in the entire range, and it is not a defect: fine media hold more and pass less, and nobody has ever escaped that. In practice this element belongs on a 1260 that meets serious dust; a bike living on clean sealed roads is better served by the P08 with its flow intact.

Care and cleaning

Servicing needs an air supply and nothing else: direct it at the clean face so the dust is pushed out through the dirty one. For anything the air will not lift, lukewarm water and a mild detergent suffice, rinsing until the water runs clear. Let it dry naturally and completely — heat sources and flames both destroy the non-woven — and refit it dry, without oil of any kind. Fitment & Compatibility
