What a motorcycle breathes is decided about twenty metres in front of it. A sealed road says very little on its own: ride it behind a tipper leaving a quarry, behind a tractor turning off a field, or behind a car that has just pulled out of a gravel entrance, and the air arriving at the airbox has nothing in common with the same road ridden alone at seven in the morning. Route maps are a poor guide to filter choice for exactly that reason, and commuting patterns are a good one. The CM265P14 is the medium for riders who spend their hours in somebody else's wake.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven, filtering at 14 µm with a rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Roughly six times finer than the 80 µm weave that is the standard medium for this housing
- Never oiled, so there is no coating to apply, to over-apply or to find again downstream
- About twice the filtering area of other performance elements, in the series airbox
- Drops into the position of the factory panel: no cutting, no adaptor, no remap
- Regenerated with compressed air rather than replaced; two years of warranty from purchase
Twenty metres ahead, not the map
A rider who covers the same route five days a week can settle the medium question honestly in about a minute. Work out the share of that ride spent in traffic rather than clear of it, then work out how much of the traffic is working vehicles rather than cars. A Shotgun 650 held in a queue behind lorries on an arterial road meets more airborne solids in a year than one ridden long distances alone on clean tarmac, whatever the two odometers say. Distance is the unit everybody has to hand; exposure is the unit that decides the filter, and the two agree only on an empty road.
Reversible, and cheap to try
All three media for this housing share one frame, one sealing face and one fitting position, which makes the decision unusually easy to revise. An owner who fits the fine element for a summer and finds the trade unconvincing can put the woven medium back in the same half hour, with nothing about the airbox, the ducting or the fuelling touched in either direction. What no medium changes is the ceiling on the whole exercise: a drop-in element does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger, and the finer cloth flows less rather than more, at 1,800 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the standard weave.
Care and cleaning
Dry servicing, as with everything in this range. An air line held on the clean side of the CM265P14 and worked outwards clears the ordinary load; water with a drop of mild detergent, at hand temperature, deals with greasy contamination and is followed by a proper rinse. Drying is open air only and takes as long as it takes. No heat of any kind touches the fabric, and the element is refitted dry. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Royal Enfield Shotgun 650, 2024 to 2026. The same fine element covers the Super Meteor 650 from 2023 and the Classic 650 from 2025, three machines on one part number. Check the year span in the Fitment tab before ordering.
