Model changeovers never fall neatly on the first of January. A dealer is still selling the last of the outgoing Svartpilen 401s while the replacements are coming off the transporter, so two machines bought in the same month can belong to either side of the change, and the tank says exactly the same thing on both. For the air filter the boundary is drawn at 2024: from that year the 401 takes PM293P14, and bikes finished before it do not.

Which side of the change is your bike on?

The registration document answers that and very little else does reliably. Paint schemes carry over, badges carry over, and a machine first registered in one year may have been built in the one before. What makes this particular boundary usable is that it is clean: the older listing stops at 2023 and this one opens in 2024, with no year claimed by both. Read the build year off the papers, quote it alongside the element code, and the question is closed in a sentence.

Why the fine medium, and what it costs

The standard weave is rated 80 microns and 5,050 litres per square metre per second. This nonwoven works at 14 microns and passes 1,800, so the retention improves by a long way and the rate drops to about a third. That is a trade rather than a promotion, and the flow half of it is surrendered continuously — on clear days as well as dusty ones. It is also not an output part: a replacement element leaves a standard machine's power where it found it, and a single homologated inside the A2 category has that ceiling fixed well upstream of the airbox. What genuinely changes is an intake restriction that starts low and can be returned there at any service.

Care and cleaning

Service the PM293P14 dry whenever you can. Compressed air held to the clean side and driven across the medium carries the load out through the face that arrested it, which covers ordinary road use completely. For a heavier season, lukewarm water with mild detergent will finish the job; rinse until the water leaves clear. Drying is done in open air alone — never a hot-air gun, never a radiator, never a flame — and the element is refitted only once no dampness is left anywhere in it.
