Sprint Filter PM127P14 air filter

The facts.

DescriptionThe whole story▼

An air filter is the one component with no feedback channel. It makes no sound of its own, alters no throttle response anybody could swear to afterwards, and shows nothing on any instrument. That matters especially on a Pikes Peak, because bikes in this trim usually carry an aftermarket exhaust as well, and once something on a motorcycle has been changed the ear begins finding improvements everywhere.

Key Features

  • A dry non-woven mat with nothing tacky anywhere in the assembly
  • Filtration rated at 14 microns where the standard woven panel is rated at 80
  • A rated 1,800 l/m²/sec of flow, against 5,050 for that standard panel
  • Drops into the series airbox as delivered, with no ducting work and no reflash
  • Cleaned and reused rather than thrown out at each service
  • Two-year guarantee running from the date of purchase

Impressions are not measurements

A new intake note, a different day, warmer air, fresh tyres and the simple fact of having just worked on the bike are all enough to produce a convincing sensation of improvement. None of them is evidence. The honest position on a drop-in element is that a standard Multistrada is not restricted by its airbox, so there is no performance for it to release, and any description promising otherwise is describing the buyer's mood rather than the motorcycle.

What can be said with a straight face

Two things, both checkable. The first is filtration: 14 microns is a finer rating than the 80 of the woven element, and finer retention keeps more of the abrasive fraction out of an engine that will be expected to run for a very long time. The second is that the part is regenerated rather than repurchased — an air line returns it to service, and Sprint Filter build it to stay with the motorcycle. The price of the first is written on the box as 1,800 l/m²/sec, and on a road-going 1200 twin that ceiling is never approached.

Care and cleaning

A blast of air on the inner face, worked outward, deals with normal dust in a couple of minutes. Once or twice in the element's life that will not do, and then it wants hand-warm water, a modest amount of mild detergent and a rinse continued until the run-off is clear. Drying happens in air and nowhere else: no radiator, no hot-air gun, no flame. PM127P14 is refitted dry, with nothing to reapply. The manufacturer's care leaflet is filed in the Downloads tab.

Fitment & Compatibility

For the Ducati Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak of 2016 and 2017. The same element appears against eleven Ducati models — the Fitment tab shows the complete set.
